Why do we become entrepreneurs?

It’s taken me almost 7 years since I started my own business to really think about why I became an entrepreneur. I have been so busy focusing on making this business successful, taking care of my family, engaging with friends and the larger community that I don’t often have time to think about this question. With almost 7 years under my belt, I’ve decided to take the time, and I hope that other entrepreneurs will share with me why they have chosen entrepreneurship.

Working has been part of my life for many years, starting as a camp counselor, a hostess and then a waitress during summers throughout my college years. I have always been motivated to work to support myself and then to contribute to my family’s financial resources. Most of the time, I have enjoyed my work in Marketing, especially working with colleagues and business partners, developing strategies and tactics to solve an array of business problems, and meeting corporate goals.

As a working mother, there were certainly challenges along the way and often tough balancing acts to meet the needs of work, parenting, and being a spousal partner. I was fortunate enough to have support at home and in my community of friends and acquaintances to make it work, but of course, there were sacrifices.

At the end of 2017, I was deciding what to do next in my career; I knew I wanted more flexibility in my life and the ability to make greater personal impact with my work. As I spoke to former colleagues, I was pleasantly surprised that many of them asked me if I’d be willing to consult to them on current marketing needs within their organizations. And yes, this is how WyndMiller Marketing got started.

So, for me, entrepreneurship somewhat fell into my life, but the strong desire to find work that met my professional and personal needs was key to making it a successful endeavor.
