Learning... the hard way
I love learning. So much that my family teases me when we go somewhere new and I “geek out” soaking up everything I can about about the place, the art, the people and the culture.
During our most recent family trip, I couldn’t wait to explore Amsterdam via its canals and take in all of the city’s history. Of course, I wanted to capture all of these moments through photos as we sailed down the canals. Then I learned the hard way. So focused on taking photo after photo of my surroundings, my phone slipped out of my hand and fell right into the canal. I couldn’t believe it and even considered jumping in after it. After discussing hiring divers to try and retrieve it, I had to let it go.
The first day was excruciating not having my phone, realizing how dependent I was on it, gps, emails, googling, news, photos, etc.. Then it was freeing (thankfully I had my laptop with me). I opened my eyes wider, listened more deliberately, and connected with my surroundings like I hadn’t done in years especially on a trip exploring new places.
I watched everyone around me looking at their phones deeply while walking by amazing and historic sights, treasured arts and beautiful scenery. What a gift to view and connect so intently with the outside world. Sometimes, it’s good to learn the hard way.
